Runway project in St. John’s, N.L., on time

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Work on the primary runway at the airport in St. John’s, N.L., is on scheduled to be completed at the end of November after flights have been delayed and cancelled over the summer because of bad weather and construction on the air strip.

The St. John’s International Airport Authority says work on the runway to upgrade its instrument landing system is 45 per cent complete.

In July, the authority says 224 flights were affected by cold, wet and foggy weather when the primary runway wasn’t available.

It says with 88 scheduled flights a day using the airport, the delays and cancellations translate into the equivalent of 2 1/2 full days of flight operations being affected.

The authority says drainage, excavation and the installation of lights as part of the runway project are complete.
