A collection of Winnipeg artists, writers, and an editor are currently collaborating together on a unique Aboriginal comic book collection.
Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection from Toronto-based publisher, Alternate History Comics (AHC) is a 200-page collection of artwork, prose and storytelling. The book features more than 24 contributors from writers and artists across North America, including Winnipeggers George Freeman, Scott Henderson, Nicholas Burns, David Robertson, and editor Hope Nicholson.
Nicholson said she spent a considerable amount of time trying to incorporate as many Indigenous writers and artists in the project as she could.
AHC president, Andy Stanleigh said the comic book strays away from all of the stereotypes, negativity, and cultural appropriations commonly seen in the media and instead focuses on Aboriginal storytelling as a celebration.
“The Aboriginal, Indigenous, Inuit, and Cree, their communities and their peoples have this huge rich heritage of storytelling that comes from their ancestors,” said Stanleigh. “They’re kept within the community and you don’t get to see a lot of the beautiful things involving the community, the spirits and the ancestors. Being able to flesh that out and display it as sort of celebration of storytelling is what the main theme of the book is about.”
