Hockey Canada committed to Montreal for 2017 world juniors despite attendance issues

Tom Renney knows he faces a different challenge than predecessor Bob Nicholson as the head of Hockey Canada.

TORONTO — Hockey Canada has expressed its commitment to Montreal as a co-host city for the 2017 world junior championship despite attendance concerns at this year’s tournament.

Hockey Canada president and CEO Tom Renney said the organization was “deeply committed” to Montreal even as the IIHF said it would keep all options open for the tournament two years from now.

Tom Renney only took over for Bob Nicholson this past summer and deferred comment on ticket prices and attendance until Hockey Canada can review the situation.

Toronto is set to host Canada’s preliminary-round games and Montreal the knockout round in 2017, flipping from this year.

Several thousand empty seats for Canadian games at Bell Centre drew criticism.

IIHF president Rene Fasel said Hockey Canada was responsible setting ticket prices.

Renney only took over for Bob Nicholson this past summer and deferred comment on ticket prices and attendance until Hockey Canada can review the situation.
