Two CBC managers involved in the network’s handling of the Jian Ghomeshi scandal have taken a leave of absence from their jobs.
The CBC reported Monday that Todd Spencer and Chris Boyce are on leave. It did not immediately specify how long they are expected to be on leave, or whether the leave is paid or unpaid.
Spencer is the head of human resources for the broadcaster, and Chris Boyce is the executive director of radio and audio. Both were interviewed by “the fifth estate” regarding the network’s handling of the Jian Ghomeshi allegations.
“The fifth estate” investigation reported that Ghomeshi called a meeting with Boyce on May 16, and told him an ex-girlfriend was threatening to go public with “embarrassing” details about his sex life. Ghomeshi denied any wrongdoing.
“I had no reason to believe that this person, that I had known for 10 years, would be telling anything other than the truth,” Boyce told CBC journalist Gillian Findlay in an interview.
Less than two months later, a group of “Q” staffers took their concerns about anonymous allegations of assault against Ghomeshi to both Boyce and Spencer. Boyce said senior management then launched an internal investigation into Ghomeshi’s human resources file, which involved conversations with “Q” employees.
Boyce told “the fifth estate” no “Q” staff interviewed reported any inappropriate behaviour by Ghomeshi. However a survey by “the fifth estate” of 17 “Q” staffers found no employees said they were asked by CBC managers about Ghomeshi’s behaviour. Boyce told the program he couldn’t get into specifics of who was interviewed.
On Oct. 23, Boyce and Chuck Thompson, the CBC’s head of public affairs, met with Ghomeshi at his lawyer’s office. Ghomeshi showed them evidence of injuries to a woman. Boyce said those images triggered the termination process for the former CBC radio star.
