HALIFAX – Firefighters and police were dispatched Wednesday to a house fire north of Halifax where at least two bodies were recovered.
RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Karine Bernier said a third person was unaccounted for.
“We have one that we still didn’t find yet,” she said in an interview.
The Halifax region issued a statement saying fire and emergency crews were sent to the home on Old Guysborough Road around 4:30 p.m. and the first truck arrived at the scene at 4:55 p.m.
In all, 30 firefighters from seven fire stations responded to the fire near Wyses Corner, where the home was engulfed in flames.
City spokesman Brendan Elliott said the number of bodies inside the home had yet to be determined by 9 p.m. local time.
“Firefighters won’t know the total count until they have done a safe and secure search of the whole house,” he said in an email. “We know of two for sure.”
The home is in a rural, wooded area about 25 kilometres northeast of Halifax Stanfield International Airport and not far from Dollar Lake Provincial Park.
