SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Two people were killed when a fire broke out on a tourist boat off Costa Rica on Thursday, the country’s Red Cross reported.
The blaze began about 9:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. EST; 1530 GMT) as the vessel was off Punta Leona along the country’s central Pacific Coast, Costa Rican Red Cross spokesman Freddy Roman said.
It was carrying about 100 people at the time and 16 had been treated by rescuers, Roman said.
More emergency crews were being sent to the area about 56 miles (90 kilometres) from the capital, San Jose, to attend to passengers with minor injuries.
