Don’t worry, Raptors fans — the team isn’t playing copycat with the Brooklyn Nets.
The Toronto Raptors posted a photo of their new logo on their Instagram account Friday afternoon and initial fan reaction was decidedly mixed.
Many felt the stylized black and white basketball with a claw mark was a little too similar to the logo of the rival Brooklyn Nets, who bumped the Raptors from the playoffs last season.
Some fans heading to the Pistons game in Detroit weren’t impressed.
“To be honest, it reminds me of Brooklyn,” said Tristan Rivera, echoing other sentiments on Twitter.
“Not sure how to feel about new @Raptors logo. Needs some color. Clean but entirely too Brooklyn,” tweeted Varand Khachadouri.
But Friday’s unveiling was merely the black and white drawing of the new logo — new uniforms and a full colour version of the new logo will be released in January.
“We’ve been working on it for a while,” said Raptors GM Masai Ujiri. “When you see the whole thing, it’s actually nothing like (Brooklyn). Our colours stay the same.”
While the complete new look won’t be released until January, the team decided to unveil the black and white drawing Friday because it would have likely surfaced soon anyway, said Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment spokesman Dave Haggith.
“It was going to be public today anyway because of the trademark application, so we decided that rather than having someone pull a copy of it from the trademark website, we’d release it to everybody at once,” said Haggith.
The new logo was designed by Sid Lee, the same agency which created the We the North campaign for the Raptors, and the “Bloody Big Deal” campaign for Toronto FC, said Haggith.
