WASHINGTON – The first order of business in the next U.S. Congress will be a Canadian one.
The Republicans say the Keystone XL pipeline will be the first item on their agenda when the new U.S. Congress convenes Jan. 6.
The new leader of the Senate, Republican Mitch McConnell, made the announcement today.
He says he’ll leave the bill open to amendments, which means it could become a venue for horse-trading, as lawmakers from different parties pack it with their own priorities.
President Barack Obama opposes that approach, because he says the proper procedure is to let his administration make its own decision once it completes its review.
The White House hasn’t announced what it would do in response. Obama could choose to veto a bill, or could sign it if it contains enough provisions he supports.
